Collaborative Class Project
Coming into this assignment I felt quite a bit nervous. I find I have a really hard time when it comes to collaborative projects, because I have a fear of relying on people to contribute “on time“. ie. getting things done when they need to be. However, when I found out that we would be making a quilt with all of our individual squares, I got so excited!
I have never done any sort of art project like this before so I am really excited to see how it will turn out!
We first started with being given a card from the teacher that had a word written on it that was a part of our worlds ecosystem, for example, soil, water, sunshine, squirrel, wildflower etc. We took about 10 minutes to plan what we wanted our interpretation in art of our word to look like. We were encouraged to use different colours and textures.
We were given a 7×7 piece of cloth fabric to make our design on, so with all of our creative ideas, we had to ensure it would all fit onto this piece of cloth. We then took about 3-5 minutes to share our ideas with our peers at our table, to get all our creative juices flowing!

Once I had my plan, I began to cut out all of the pieces I would need, I tried to draw them out first but the coloured fabric was too dark, so I just had to wing it!
This project will be completed over 2 classes, I got majority of mine done on the first class, so here is what it looked like after the first class!:
And after the second class, I had plenty of time to add some extra details and make him (I named him Tommy) look more 3D, and add some more textures. Here is what he looked like!:
I did some yarn wovening?? I believe it was called, with definitely the wrong spelling and glued some polyester fur onto Tommy as well!
Artist Statement
My art represents the item I got very well (I got squirrel), and I think by looking at it, people can tell
A) What is is and B) the different materials I used to make it.
I think my art will connect to the larger piece by demonstrating that with the green background behind the squirrel relates to the green aspect of nature and perhaps some other of my classmates art (green grass, or green trees). I think this also relates to the world in general, because squirrels are so helpful for the environment and rely in so many other things in nature as well- which also relates to the quilt.
Within this art, I tried to use different textures (fabric, felt, fur, and fluffy materials), it was quite hard at the beginning, and getting the hang of things made it really hard, but by the end I had gotten the hang of it! I did try to draw on the fabric before I cut it out (to try and ensure I had straight lines), but the fabric was too dark so it did not work, so this was a learning curve for me.
I did not use an outside source for inspiration, nor did I use another artist for inspiration, rather I went off of what my heart told me to do, and to keep myself engaged and entertained! And I think it turned out really well, I am very happy with it!
