GenAI and it’s use!

I have found GenAI useful for educational purposes because it is inevitable that AI is going to be involved in not only our futures as teachers, but for our future students as well. Already, kids in elementary school use AI in almost all their classes, so by the time they reach middle or high school, and that far into the future, AI is going to be a lot bigger than it currently is.

I do also believe there are a lot of issues that can and will arise with the use of GenAI. This could again, both reflect on both the teachers and the students. Students may use AI to complete assignments for them, or homework assignments (cheating on tests etc.). however, on the flip side of this, it may also be very difficult to determine whether students are using AI to complete assignments. There are AI detecting websites; however, those are also AI made and used- contradictory isn’t it.

A website we looked at in class was Perplexity, this was one that I had heard of, but had never used. Upon opening the app I noticed how “techy” it looks, like it was deigned by robots. I included a photo of what it looks like:

I also like that you do not need an account to use this website.

Teachers and AI

As teachers, it is important that we are not only creating assignments that cannot be completed by AI (in class learning, or physical holistic learning), but also assignments that if a student was able in 5 minutes to plug it into CHATGPT, then truly, what are they learning? We, as teachers need to ensure our lessons are informative and can be completed in the classroom, without the use of technology.

I wanted to include this YouTube video that I found on GenAI, and how / why it is and can be useful in classrooms, and how it is educational.

Teaching Students About AI

I think it is also extremely important for teachers to teach their students about GenAI, and the potential impacts of it. there are major environmental implications of using AI, which again does not get taught about enough in schools. If we are teaching our students how to properly use AI; like how to focus on the processes or learning, then perhaps they will use it more safely and responsibly. I included another video down below of how to help teach our students to use GenAI more responsibly.
